For Brittany Maples, teaching isn’t just a career—it’s a lifelong calling rooted in childhood admiration, imagination, and heart. As a little girl, Brittany looked up to her elementary teachers, especially those who took the time to build positive, personal relationships with her. Those meaningful connections left a lasting impression and inspired Brittany’s own journey into education.

Long before she had a classroom of her own, Brittany could often be found at the library with her mother, checking out books and bringing them home to read aloud to her stuffed animals—her first “students.” Playing school quickly became a favorite pastime, and she discovered the joy of nurturing curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning. That joy is something she now brings to her own classroom every day.

Brittany earned her bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from East Tennessee State University and is licensed to teach Pre‑K through third grade. She began her teaching career in second grade, moved to third the following year, and ultimately found her home in first grade—where she has now taught for about ten years. Her entire teaching career has been spent at Piedmont Elementary, a place she describes as feeling like home. “I love our school—our staff truly is a family,” Brittany shares. “The positive culture and loving environment created under Mrs. Allen’s leadership is something I’m deeply grateful to experience every day.”

As a first‑grade teacher, Brittany teaches all academic subjects while also intentionally focusing on social and emotional development. What she loves most is watching children grow in confidence and independence throughout the year. First grade is full of powerful “firsts”: reading a first book independently, mastering a tricky math concept, or learning how to be a kind and supportive friend. Those breakthrough moments—both academic and personal—are what make each day meaningful.

Beyond her classroom, Brittany has also played an important role in mentoring future educators. Over the years, she has hosted and guided several student teachers, finding joy and pride in watching them grow into confident professionals. Seeing former student teachers succeed in their own classrooms using the strategies she shared is one of her greatest professional accomplishments.

This summer, Brittany will take on an exciting new leadership role as the Summer Learning Camp Site Director at Piedmont Elementary. Alongside colleague Ashley Hall, she has already been hard at work planning behind the scenes. Having served in summer school teaching roles for several years, Brittany is eager to give her all in this new capacity.

Outside of school, Brittany stays busy in her most important role—being a mom. She and her husband, Jonathan, are proud parents to three energetic children: Carter (7), Catherine (5), and Cameron (3). She jokingly describes herself as the family’s “chaos coordinator.” The Maples family enjoys traveling when possible, spending time on the lake, cheering on the Vols in all sports, and making memories with family and friends on the weekends. In those rare quiet moments to herself, Brittany enjoys reading and crafting.

With her dedication, warmth, and passion for student growth, Brittany Maples makes a lasting impact on Piedmont Elementary and the students who are fortunate to begin their school journey in her care.
